Character Information

Full Name: Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel
Nicknames: Harley Quinn
Canon: DCEU
PB: Margot Robbie
Journal: [personal profile] occasionalbitch
4th Walling: Yes
Canon Point: Post- Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Canon Information

Trigger Warnings: Abusive relationships, child endangerment, genre typical violence
History: DCEU Wiki

Personality:
"She's crazier than [The Joker]. And more fearless." (Amanda Waller, Suicide Squad)

"I'm known to be quite vexing. I'm just forewarning you." (Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad)

"Why is it always a knife fight every single time you open your mouth? You know, outside you're amazing. But inside, you're ugly." (Captain Boomerang, Suicide Squad)

"Oh hey, you're the asshole no one likes." (Dinah Lance, Birds of Prey)

Harley Quinn wants to be your friend. Harley Quinn is ready to fight you. These two statements seem contradictory until you know that the first and most basic truth of Harley Quinn is this: she wants attention. Sometimes that means deliberately provoking the abusive head prison guard knowing full well the only thing she'll get for it is a high-voltage zap, sometimes that means crawling into a man's lap in front of her volatile and possessive murder clown paramour, and sometimes that means shoving her tongue into Batman's mouth immediately after almost drowning. Sure, someone will suffer for it, maybe even die, but by God they'll notice her. If Harley were at all capable of curbing those self-destructive impulses, her life sure would be different.

If Harley loves you, then she really freakin' loves you and sometimes that decision is made on a dime. Harley declares Huntress to be "fucking fabulous" and "so cool" pretty much the moment they meet and treats Dinah Lance like a longtime BFF because the other woman just so happens to be next to her at a bar. She even roots for Renee Montoya to have a happy ending, despite Renee being a cop, making Harley drop her breakfast sandwich, and hitting her right in the tit (the three cardinal sins). In less than a few hours, Harley pivots from ready to cut open Cassandra Cain's stomach to painting her nails and giving important life advice ("Never pay taxes!") and the secret to her new Auntie Mame Maim act is simple. Cassandra thinks Harley is worth respecting. Cassandra pays attention.

She can be fiercely and unquestionably loyal, often at great personal risk. Harley risked her job and then her life over and over on the thin hope of Joker's love. When she believed the Joker to be dead and was given the chance to have him brought back by Enchantress, Harley was too invested in her new friendships with Task Force X to take her up on the offer. The fate of the world was at stake but what it really boiled down to for Harley was this: that witch hurt her friends and needed a good stab through the heart. They had only known each other a few hours but shared adversity really speeds up the bonding process.

Her bright smile and bubbly personality has fooled many a poor victim into dropping their guard. She's willing to let everyone think she's a fool if there's even the slightest chance she can use it to her advantage later, but if someone of no consequence insults her then watch out. She brutally breaks a man's legs without a second thought when he calls her a "fucking moron" even though the man was employed by a dangerous and powerful crime lord and it happened in that crime lord's own club right in front of him.

Harley is a woman deeply in love with love, which seems romantic as a concept but the reality in this case is as terrifying as it is dangerous. Her emotions can change at the drop of a hat and swing between extremes, but tend to stay positive. She believes you're never fully dressed without a smile and that it's better to laugh than to cry.

Even with her intelligence, and she is intelligent despite the act she puts on, Harley is exceptionally prone to manipulation and suggestibility. Part of this comes from a fear of losing approval and part is a lack of trust in her own abilities. Harley may charge full speed into social blunders, but she will backpedal or deflect when she senses she's losing her audience. She's quick to adapt to the needs and expectations of whoever is closest to her, an adept "social chameleon", easily sliding between a giddy goofball and a ruthless attendant, depending on who she is with at the time.

Physical description: Multiple tattoos, multiple ear piercings, bleached blonde hair with pink and blue ends often worn in pigtails, vibrant makeup, unnaturally pale skin. 5'9" and 118lbs of lean muscle.
Meta Powers
Peak human condition - While Harley does not have superpowers, she is considered to be a top athlete and in peak physical condition. Her strength, speed, and stamina are at or near the upper limit of what a human body allows.

Master acrobat - She has a gymnastics background and attended college on an athletics scholarship. Her skill as a gymnast is on the level of an Olympic athlete and she uses it to her advantage in combat.

Proficient combatant - She has no formal combat training but is consistently shown to dominate in physical fights against other humans, as well as when using blunt force weapons and firearms.

Stunt / getaway driver - Again, although she has no formal training in stunt work she can pull off some very dangerous action moves with motor vehicles. The rule of thumb seems to be if it looks cool or would be funny, she can get away with it.

High Tolerance - While other canon iterations have Poison Ivy providing an injection that gives Harley augmented physical abilities and an immunity to all toxins, there is not yet any sign that Poison Ivy even exists in the DCEU. However, there is a scene in Birds of Prey where Zsasz injects Harley with a paralytic that she is able to completely overcome within minutes. Based on that scene (And the amount of alcohol we see her down in one night. She downs a line of absinthe shots as a warm up, damn.), I consider it safe to consider Harley having a high tolerance or ability to quickly metabolize toxins. Perhaps the chemical bath and possible repeated exposure to Joker toxin contributed to a tolerance build up.

Earth AU

Earth AU Name: Harleen Frances Quinzel
Earth AU Age: 32
Trigger Warnings: minors engaged in criminal acts, mention of teen pregnancy, sexual relationship with authority figure

History: Harleen Frances Quinzel was born to Nick and Sharon Quinzel on July 20, 1988, in Brooklyn, NY. Nick was a small time con man but cleaned up his act and became an honest blue collar worker after nearly missing the birth of his daughter while being interrogated by the police. Sharon was an attentive if sometimes overbearing woman who was a stay at home mother for Harleen's infancy and early childhood, but took on part time jobs to make ends meet as Harleen got older and more able to take care of herself. Harleen was a latchkey kid for her elementary school years, and started showing athletic aptitude early which her parents encouraged.

Nick had dreams of a future Olympian and Sharon decided gymnastics was the perfect talent for the pageant circuit. Harleen thrived in competition but found pageants restrictive and boring, so it was shortly after being pushed into that world that she began to rebel.

In late middle school through early high school, she fell in with a rougher crowd and started to sneak around behind her parents' backs. Harleen got her hands on a fake ID and smoked, drank, stayed out late, and dated older boys who had more in common with Nick's early years than her father approved of. At fifteen, she got a tattoo of a dolphin on her hip after a fight with her boyfriend. She later had a pregnancy scare (which was a false alarm) and her boyfriend dumped her at the first sign of consequences. He later went to juvie on multiple counts of larceny, and Harleen cleaned up her act.

In her Sophomore year of highschool, she brought her grades back up and refocused on gymnastics after convincing her mother to give up on pageant dreams. Harleen hadn't won an award of note in years anyway, but had a real shot at getting somewhere with athletics. In fact, Harleen landed a full scholarship to the University of Georgia to join their women's gymnastics team where she enrolled in UGA's "Double Dawgs" dual study program to achieve a Psychology BS and an Applied Behavior Analysis MS in 5 years. Between dual program studies and fulfilling her scholarship obligations, Harleen skipped nearly every social event of undergrad. She began wearing false glasses and dressing plainly during these years to take focus off her looks, deciding she would rather be noticed for her achievements.

After UGA, Harleen was accepted to Stanford University on another athletics scholarship in a joint MD/PhD program. She blossomed more at Stanford than she had at UGA, making friends and starting to develop a style that was more polished professional than intentional wallflower, although she was careful to curb an impulses that felt too close to her rebel years. In her final year at Stanford, she developed a romantic interest in a professor and pursued a sexual relationship with him. The university investigated them when a rival student of Harleen's caught her leaving his office and started the rumor mill. Because Harleen was not a current student of the professor and was so close to graduating the program, no official action was taken, but the rumors persisted. Harleen was frozen out of her peer group except for one, a handsome young man from a wealthy Manhattan family who remained friendly with her. She and the young man began a relationship and moved back to New York together after Harleen was offered a position with a psychiatric research group.

The Event occurred about a year after Harleen returned to New York, and about six months after her young man proposed. Her fiance regularly brushed off her attempts to talk with him about her experience and chided her for getting involved in conspiracies. Upset at his lack of support, and unable to forget about the terrifying but passionate man she had seen in the Event, Harleen ended her engagement and moved back to her parents' Bensonhurst brownstone. Her father had been renovating the basement into a studio apartment while she was in California for extra income, so at least she was spared the terrible embarrassment of having to sleep in her childhood room again.

Personality: After Harleen's dabble in rebellion, she's very aware of how easily she can be influenced and give in to excess and now holds herself to a higher standard of self control. She knows her limits and avoids testing her own boundaries. She tries to do "everything by the book" even when that isn't what brings her happiness or satisfaction, because following her heart got her in a bad spot and putting her nose to the grindstone and ignoring her impulsive side got her recognition and achievement. Even her engagement was in part because she felt like agreeing to marry a nice man from a nice family was the "thing to do" and ending the relationship was honestly a relief.

Harleen is fastidious and reserved in her professional and personal life. She knows that she is beautiful and resents that her looks might have a hand in her success more than her skill, so she tries not to stand out or be flashy. She intentionally hides her face behind frames at work, keeps her makeup simple and hairstyle plain, and tries to keep her accent subdued in order to fit her mental image of the perfect, professional woman. Her one indulgence is high heeled shoes, and even that is a calculated move. At 5'6" in bare feet, heels help Harleen prevent people from literally looking down on her.

She puts on a front of humility but is very proud of how far she's come at a young age, and the work put in to earn everything she has achieved. The fastest way to get under her skin is to disparage her accomplishments or dismiss her as a dumb blonde, but she avoids direct confrontation because of an idea that it makes her look bitchy instead of confident.

Physical description: 5'9", 125 lbs, one faded tattoo of a dolphin on her hip, two piercings on each ear, medium-long blonde hair and natural skin tone, prefers neutral makeup. She wears thick framed glasses at work to appear more professional.

(0:24 - 0:52)
"What are you gonna do? You gonna kill me, Mistah J?"
"What? Oh, I'm not gonna kill ya. I'm just gonna hurt ya. Really, really bad."
"You think so? Well I can take it."

Anything else? Harleen's accent is much less pronounced than in canon, due to spending years in different regions of the US and a conscious effort to downplay it in an attempt to sound professional and serious.
